Learn to play Gamelan Angklung Every Wednesday from October 2 to December 11, 2019 6:00PM Learn to play Balinese Gamelan in Philadelphia Indonesia is famous for its traditional percussion orchestras. Known as Gamelan, these ensembles use bronze-keyed xylophones, tuned gongs, and drums to create a multi-layered texture. The music is fun to learn and captivating for audiences. It is also a powerful way to build and strengthen community. The Philadelphia Folklore Project in collaboration with Modero & Company is hosting an introductory performance class in Balinese Gamelan. The class meets for 10 Wednesday evenings, 6-8pm, beginning October 2nd. The group will learn to play classical compositions from Bali for Gamelan Angklung, culminating in a public performance. No prior experience in Gamelan or any other form of music is assumed. The instructor is Professor Tom Whitman of Swarthmore College. “Pak Tom” studied Gamelan for a year in Bali with the late I Madé Gerindem, a master musician from Teges, Peliatan. Subsequent teachers include I Wayan Rai, Indra Sadguna, and I Nyoman Suadin. Tom earned a PhD in Music from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1997 he founded Gamelan Semara Santi at Swarthmore College, an ensemble devoted to traditional performing arts of Bali which has performed at many venues in the Philadelphia area, including concerts with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center.
