Unidos da Filadelfia
(Philadelphia United) is a community-based samba school modeled after the Carnaval parade organizations of Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia in Brazil.
Michael Stevens teaches regular classes for learners at all levels of experience. Classes are drop-in -- you don't have to commit to a set number or series of classes. Pay as you go and attend when you can. The more you attend, the more you play, the more you learn!
Instruments are provided, although some students buy their own after playing for a while. Rhythms include Batucada (Rio style), Samba Reggae, Xote, Maracatu, Carioca Funk, Frevo and other variations.
All-Levels, Beginners Focused: Classes are slower paced, with more attention to teaching rhythms and technique. These classes are open to everyone but are ideal for folks who are new to drumming, new to samba and/or are learning an instrument that is new to them.
All-Levels, Advanced Focused: Classes are just that - anyone can attend, regardless of previous experience. That said, this class is mostly attended by people who have already been playing for a bit. This class is faster paced, with a lot of learning "on the fly".
Classes are scheduled as follows:
All Levels, Beginners Focused: Sundays @11:30am ($15)
All Levels, Advanced Focused: Thursdays @6:30pm ($15)
The schedule is subject to change (especially Sundays), so it's best to check the google calendar which is kept up to date. Mike also sends out emails about changes in class times. In order to get on his notification list, email him at sambafreak13@gmail.com
This is a lively and friendly community of amateur drummers that includes novices as well as experienced musicians. Unidos is sometimes invited to perform at community events and we love to get people dancing!
Our rehearsals currently take place at The Commodore Barry Club in Mt Airy, 6815 Emlen St, Philly, PA, 19119
