Luigi Mazzocchi, violin, was born in Venezuela, where he studied in the El Sistema Youth Orchestras with José F. del Castillo. He was a member of the Lara Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Venezuela and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. Mazzocchi has performed as soloist with the main Venezuelan orchestras and has attended international music festivals in the Americas, Europe and Australia. He is a prizewinner in solo competitions in Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the United States. He completed a Bachelor of Music degree at Rowan University with Liliana Ciulei and a Master of Music degree at Temple University with Helen Kwalwasser. Mazzocchi is the concertmaster of the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra, associate concertmaster of the Delaware Symphony and a member of the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Gaudeamus and Cachasa Ensembles. He has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philly Pops and the Serafin String Quartet. The Pagode Project is a Philadelphia-based ensemble fusing the styles and rhythms of samba, jazz, funk and other Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian influences. The word Pagode (pah-GAW-jee) means a "celebration with food, music and dance" and is a subgenre of acoustic samba originally from Rio de Janeiro that uses both melodic and percussion instruments and group singing. Members of The Pagode Project also perform regularly with Alô Brasil, Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra and various other jazz, rock, Latin and world music projects in the Philadelphia region. Venissa’s artistry stems from the necessity to express the many influences that have nourished her spirit as a Cuban American. She was born in Ithaca, New York and hails from a long line of Cuban artists. But it was her grandfather, Jacobo Ros Capablanca, a Cuban composer who instilled in her a life-long passion for music.

After completing high school, she moved to Philadelphia, where she enrolled at the University of the Arts, connected with her Cuban roots (via her grandfather’s compositions) and majored in Jazz Vocal Performance. She became actively involved in Philadelphia’s Latin community and music scene and began her career as a vocal instructor with the Asociación de Músicos Latino Americanos, better known as AMLA. Over time she performed with a variety of Latin, jazz and world music groups. It was from the support and encouragement of this community that inspired Venissa to embark on the first of four life changing visits to Cuba, where she conducted research and studied Afro Cuban song, dance and percussion.

The goal of these workshops is to expand the participants' ability to both improvise and create their own rhythmic patterns in an ensemble situation or as a soloist.

Lenny Seidman, tabla player/composer and co director of award winning Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra, has developed his teaching approach synthesizing years of tabla studies with the legendary Zakir Hussain, his work with master South Indian violinist Adrian L'Armand, his 17 year history with Spoken Hand and his many collaborations with globally diverse choreographers.




Part 1 began with the “Universe of One”. I explored with the participants the vast interior world of just one beat as a template for longer cycles. We utilized clapping and recitation of the Sanskrit rhythm syllables used in the North and South Indian drumming traditions. We then applied them on our instruments and voices with special attention paid to the melodic and dynamic components of rhythm.




Part II included a review and expansion of the first session, adding context to the overall Indian rhythm system known as Tal or Tala, introduction to tintal theka (cycle of 16 beats) and tihai (ending). We also learned a 16 beat pattern and applied everything we've been working on to ensemble playing.


Part III will include adequate review of previous sessions, building on tintal and tihai, and learning short compositions in cycles of 16 beats. I will introduce polyrhythms starting with breaking down phrases of 3's, and apply everything learned to date to extended ensemble playing.

Growing up in Buenos Aires, Natalia Clavier was immersed in a world of music – classical, jazz, Argentinian folk & pop and Spanish singer-songwriters, as well as the revolutionary sounds of American soul and protest rock.

A move to Barcelona broadened her horizons further, and she was soon adding vocals to dance singles, singing live at raves in front of thousands as well as solo in the rather more intimate surrounds of the jazz circuit. There she met fellow ex-pat Federico Aubele, an Argentine singer-songwriter with several albums to his name on Thievery Corporation’s label Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL Music). Natalia and Federico became partners, in music and in life, and the demos they made soon led to her debut album, Nectar, released in 2008 on ESL Music.

Nectar took a traditional approach, using Natalia’s pure and beautiful voice to gorgeous effect over spare jazz-soul arrangements. It was a perfect reflection of where she was at during that period, as was Live at the Triple Door, the live album that followed one year later, and her live work as lead vocalist with the celebrated Thievery Corporation.

But a later move to Brooklyn brought new sounds, new ideas and a new urge to incorporate the dynamism of one of the world’s premier melting spots into her Buenos Aires soul. In came Adrian Quesada, Grammy-winning producer and guitarist with Grupo Fantasma, The Echocentrics and Ocote Soul Sounds. Together they’ve wrought a transformation for her new album, Lumen. In place of Barcelona’s laidback vibe, Lumen moves with the bumper-to-bumper bustle of Brooklyn, a place where sounds collide and mutate.

"Plucking her custom-built charango, Gina Chavez sets the mood for lyrical scenery, but it's the folkloric "Embrujo" of her voice that sears the memory. With a vocal punch strong enough to back The Kills on their 10-year anniversary tour and striking enough to make her one of National Public Radio's eight "New Latin Artists Playing SXSW," Chavez is building toward the Fall 2013 release of her sophomore album, “up.rooted”, produced by Michael Ramos (Patty Griffin, John Mellancamp, The BoDeans, The Rembrandts). Following appearances with Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Grupo Fantasma, and Del Castillo, Chavez was asked to represent the City of Austin on tour twice in Japan as the official Music Ambassador, and was voted The Austin Chronicle's Best Latin Traditional artist of 2012-13. She is back from eight months of mission work in El Salvador and established a college scholarship fund for girls she lived with in a gang-dominated part of San Salvador. Southern Living and Olay named Chavez one of 11 "southern iconic women who have left a beautiful footprint across the South."
