May 28, 2015 7:00-8:30 PM Gerald Veasley's Electric Mingus Project at Hawthorne Park
Bassist/educator/entrepreneur/composer Gerald Veasley is one of the busiest, most in demand and versatile players anywhere, having performed with dozens of giants, including Grover Washington, Jr. and Joe Zawinul. Few are better equipped to pay tribute to one of the true jazz legends, b...assist/composer Charles Mingus. Veasley leads the five-piece “Electric Mingus Project,” which performs famed Mingus compositions via modern electronic instruments. But as Veasley says, “Though Mingus wrote or inspires our music and the music on our Electric Mingus Project CD, the feeling, power, and irrepressible soul that bursts from every song belongs to no one but the musicians of our group. Charles Mingus wouldn’t want it any other way. Our music and our recording should reflect not just how you play, but also how you are as a person.”

May 28, 2015 8:30 PM Chicano Batman at the Trocadero
From Afro-Taino Productions' newsletter "Keeping You in the Loop"
"The band known as Chicano Batman – comprised of members Bardo, Carlos, Eduardo, & Gabriel – are officially rock stars. Say it ain’t so: They took Coachella’s crowd on a magic carpet ride, on a breeze of wah-wah reverb and gurgling organ riffs, leaving rock ‘experts’ like Rolling Stone magazine standing in a pool of their own drool & confusion, purple stains on their faces. Unable to fight it, they proudly claimed Chicano Batman as one of the top 25 things they saw at Coachella. Another example: The boys were recruited to be the official opening act for ex-White Stripes blues/rock trailblazer Jack White, on his tour through the midwest. After churning the slow-cooking pot of traditionalist rock with a different rhythm (and sabor), new audiences couldn’t help but notice, and accept, for better or for worse, that a different perspective of Rock Music exists. It’s colored in samba melodies, with a fluid framework of song structure, morphing from Free Love-era rhythm vamps to Fela-fueled bass thumps. It’s not a headbanger’s ball anymore. Not that there’s anything wrong with headbangers – come one, come all, this land was made for you and me, y’know? But I prefer my Rock hard enough to crack a smile from the hardest chola; this Rock is deep, educated from a library filled with the history of Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson, Jorge & Carlos Santana, and more blue-collar Blues. All the influences are there for purists to approve – but you can’t deny that it tastes different…better. In fact, you LOVE it, and want more. The Bat-signal is in the sky, the cumbia is rockin’ & rollin’, and we’re gonna headbang to this stone groove – the same way the rest of America is doing it when Chicano Batman comes to town. Real talk: To hear a band bridge so many genres into one cohesive groove, traversing musical generations is amazing; to see them enact the fusion live on stage? Well, that is some official Rock Star magic."

May 15, 2015 6:00-9:00 PM "The Order of Things" Exhibition Opening at The Barnes Foundation
Contemporary art lovers, join us on May 15 for the exhibition opening party for The Order of Things. Three internationally renowned artists have been commissioned to react to Dr. Barnes's uncoventional arrangements of art. What will they come up with? Here's your chance to see the show before it opens to the public.
What happens when three internationally renowned contemporary artists respond to the legendary Barnes collection? This summer, Mark Dion, Judy Pfaff, and Fred Wilson challenge the way you see Dr. Barnes’s unconventional arrangement of art with provocative large-scale installations in our new exhibition The Order of Things. Celebrate the opening, and see the show before it opens to the public!
Philly’s own King Britt will perform a live, improvised sonic presentation along with bassist Anthony Tidd, guitarist Chuck Treece and keyboardist Damon Bennett
