What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that infuses dance, music, gymnastics, self-defense and the Portuguese language. Those that practice this art form, known as Capoeiristas, appear to defy gravity as they jump, flip, spin and cartwheel through the air. Capoeira, for these artists, embodies a discipline, mindset and gives a rhythm to their lives.
Capoeira was born out of the struggle for freedom. African slaves brought it to Brazil in the 16th century and cleverly disguised this powerful form of self-defense as a harmless dance. To hide their fighting spirit from their masters, the earliest Capoeiristas combined playful, graceful dance and acrobatic movements with deadly kicks. While training, they avoided injuries by keeping direct physical contact to a minimum. Songs, percussion instruments, and clapping completed the ritual. For the master, Capoeira was merely entertainment-for the slave, it was a fight for liberation.
Capoeira as a martial art is clever and deceptive. Often appearing vulnerable, the good Capoeirista knows the right time to strike back with lethal power and grace. Musically, Capoeira is enchanting. Beautiful melodies, pulsating rhythms, and the cries and shouts of the crowd blend into one intensely charged atmosphere perfect for the game of Capoeira.
Come to Spruce St. Harbor Park at Penn's Landing and see this unique Brazilian martial art. FREE
Stick around for a surprise performance afterward.

September 21, 2016 10:00AM - 12:00 PM Diasporic Movement Practice Series with Lela Aisha Jones
Diasporic Movement Practice Series
With Lela Aisha Jones
Wednesdays 9/21, 10/19, 11/16 10am-12pm
Diasporic Movement Practice (DMP): Taught by Lela Aisha Jones (and many before and after her), DMP's are contemporary movement practices grounded in dance cultures and traditions of African and Black peoples. Lela's strongest foundations in her diasporic movement practice are dances common in southern United States (primarily Florida), Guinea, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, and northeastern Brazil (primarily Salvador, Bahia). She also brings to her teaching a wide range of gestural, socially conscious, spiritual, modern dance, and improvisational tools and inspirations.
September - DMP | Physicalities Realities: We will investigate how diasporic dances meet our bodies in fresh ways as well as multiple entry points for engaging with, understanding, and embodying movement culture that is with us everyday in our U.S. lived experience. The Black/African diasporic presence in our bodies seems to be continuously (even conveniently) elusive remaining unnamed and unframed in many spaces of privilege. We will awake what is unconscious in our bodies from diaspora. We will honor what cannot be proven. We will go back to the beginning of our bodies engaging with diasporic culture. We will start over and be honest. We will reopen this process.
October - DMP | Diaspora Unbound is a journey into the creative potential of the spiritual, conceptual, and physical energies that exist in movement of African descent and cultures of Black peoples. Itoffers poly-sensing as an addition to the already well established poly-rhythmic approaches to movement that are vibrant and alive within diasporic movement cultures. Expect a class or workshop that provides exhilarating body discoveries with unexpected physical explosion and intricate narratives. In this class you will experience physicalities derived from movement practices in the U.S. and the broader diasporic experience.
November - DMP | Merges Diverges (Swing, Drop, Two Step, Triplets, Bounce): Movement styles of diasporic lineage collide and converge as Lela Aisha Jones has discovered in her experience, embodiment, research, and artistic migrations through African descendant traditions and cultures of Black peoples. In this session let your body defy time and fall into the depth of complexity. Expect to experience time lapse conversions of moving bodies over generations, such as the city boy slide (from the 1990s Florida-dirty-dirty-teen-club-life) as akin to KuKu/KouKou (a long lineaged Guinean dance). Also expect to embody physicalities that make these dances so importantly their own creation and from their own time.

September 15, 2016 8:00 PM Vieux Farka Touré at World Cafe Live PHL
Often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara”, Vieux Farka Touré was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré, who died in 2006. Ali Farka Touré came from a historical tribe of soldiers, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. His father dissaproved due to the pressures he had experienced being a musician. Rather, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. But with help from family friend the kora maestro Toumani Diabaté, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to become a musician shortly before Ali passed.

Philadelphia native and percussion master, Pablo Batista is a 2000 Pew Fellow and graduate of Temple University, who has performed, recorded, and toured with a range of leading jazz, R&B, Latin, Pop, and Gospel artists including Bono, George Howard, Alicia Keyes, Gerald Levert, Jeffrey Osborne, Eddie Palmieri, Teddy Pendergrass, Diane Reeves, Grover Washington, Jr., Musiq, Manny Oquendo’s Conjunto Libre, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 2015, Batista received a Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Project grant for El Viaje (The Journey), a performance work blending traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms and contemporary Western instrumentation with Afro-Caribbean choreography.
As a songwriter and composer, Pablo’s musical direction is the result of many years of study, research, and blending folkloric drumming, dance, and chant with the great American music he’s been listening to and playing, for decades. Pablo is inspired by his roots and moved by the struggles it took to get to this point. As a passionate teacher he shares what he was taught and has gathered over his career, about time and rhythm.

September 12, 2016 7:00-9:00 PM Kaoru Watanabe: Japanese Taiko Drum and Shinobue Flute Concert
Japanese taiko drumming is a modern blend of traditional festival drumming and contemporary percussion ensemble playing. Growing out of postwar Japan, it features performance techniques that are starkly different from Western practice, with graceful, powerful body movements reminiscent of dance or martial arts. A masterful and engaging performer, Kaoru Watanabe will present a concert of traditional and original compositions that push the boundaries of tradition into innovative combinations. The concert will also feature taiko drummer Fumi Tanakadate and master Korean Piri player Gamin.
Kaoru Watanabe is a Japanese taiko drummer and shinobue flutist. After obtaining a BFA in jazz flute performance at the Manhattan School of Music, he joined Kodo, Japan’s most renown taiko ensemble, training in Sado Island, Japan, and performing around the globe over a decade. Now based in Brooklyn, he operates his own taiko center and has also taught at Princeton, Wesleyan, Colby, and Dickinson. He has collaborated with National Living Treasure Bando Tamasaburo, Jason Moran, So Percussion, Adam Rudolph, Kenny Endo, Stefon Harris, and Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, Imani Uzuri, calligrapher Kakinuma Koji, and many others. He has performed his compositions in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, Kabukiza, and Blue Note NYC.

An Afternoon of Acoustic Jazz with
Eugene Friesen and Friends
Sunday, September 11, 2016
St. Martin in the Fields, 4 pm
For the 3rd year in a row, internationally known cellist Eugene Friesen and friends will appear at the Church of St. Martin in the Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a festive performance of contemporary acoustic jazz. The afternoon of music is a benefit for The Children’s Tumor Foundation. Friesen will appear with Trio Globo, a group of artists with roots in jazz, classical and sacred music, and rhythmic influences derived from travels in six continents. Appearing with Friesen will be pianist and master harmonica player Howard Levy, and percussionistGlen Velez who together epitomize the quintessential group for the 21st century. The late Dave Brubeck wrote:“Eugene, Howard and Glen are magnificent players with distinct musical voices. Together they have a fresh new sound and offer a unique vision of the world of music.“
Guest artists are a regular part of the festive performance, and this year is no exception. Friesen welcomes gospel singer Theresa Thomason, and Simon Shaheen a Palestinian-American violin and oud virtuoso and composer.

September 10, 2016 7:30 PM Mehmet Polat Trio at Crossroads Calvary Center
The Mehmet Polat Trio is a spiritual yet adventurous meeting of three masters of their magical instruments: ney, kora and oud rooted in Ottoman, Anatolian, Balkan and West African music traditions. Their original compositions are colored by daring improvisations and grooves, presented in an atmosphere of chamber music. The Mehmet Polat Trio invites you to a sincere musical journey from the past to the present.
Mehmet Polat was born and raised in Urfa, Turkey, and studied Ottoman music in Istanbul. His new approach to the oud – a close relative of the lute common not only in Turkey but also North Africa, the Arab world, and the Caucusus — and his broadened vision towards music making brought him to Amsterdam in 2007, where he collaborated and experimented with many other musicians from around the world and became fascinated by the inner world and spiritual side of African music, especially the timbre of the harp-like kora. With kora as the earth element, oud as space and ney as air, the idea of Mehmet Polat Trio was born.
Victor Sams was born and raised in the Dutch Antilles, and grew up playing reggae. Seeking to learn more of his African roots, he studied kora in Mali. In addition to several percussion instruments, he plays kamale ngoni, a small kora first used in Wassoulou popular music in the 1960s and derived from the ancient ceremonial donso ngoni (hunter’s harp) of southern Mali.
Ney player Pelin Başar studied classical Turkish music and composition in Istanbul, was an accompanist for the Turkish State Choir of Samsun, and now lives in Paris. She joined the trio in 2016. The ney, a type of reed flute, is one of the most ancient instruments of Turkey and the region and an important solo instrument in both secular classical Turkish music and the ritual music of the Mevlevi Sufi order.

September 7, 2016 5:00-8:00 PM Penn Museum Summer Nights Concert with Trinidelphia
Trinidelphia
Providing the summer series finale, Trinidelphia has been pleasing local audiences since 2005 with a rich combination of American and Caribbean styles. Fusing Trinidadian soca and calypso with Latin jazz, reggae, salsa, and American top 40, they have developed a sound all their own. Their unique and rhythmic arrangements of jazz and popular songs cast the steelpan in fresh new light, pushing the stylistic and artistic boundaries of an often-typecast instrument.
From Bluegrass to Creole, from Afro-Cuban to Mexican Mariachi—with a little 80s pop in the mix—Penn Museum’s popular Summer Nights Concert Series offers a little something for everyone. Now in its seventh year, the Wednesday night series runs from June 15 through September 7, 5:00 to 8:00 pm, in the Museum’s outdoor Stoner Courtyard garden.
The Pepper Mill Café offers a garden bar, with beer, wine, and cocktails as well as non-alcoholic beverages, and regionally-themed happy hour fare available for purchase. Guests can opt to sit at outdoor tables, stage-front seating, or lawn seating to enjoy the performances. Galleries remain open, and guests may choose to take a short docent-led gallery tour at intermission, or enjoy Museum galleries on their own, until 8:00 pm. Concerts take place rain or shine, moving inside in inclement weather.
General admission, which includes admission to the Museum’s galleries, is just $10; $5 PennCard holders and Penn Medicine and CHOP employees with ID; free for Penn Museum Members. (There is an additional fee for the special exhibition The Golden Age of King Midas.)
The Penn Museum is located at 3260 South Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104 (on Penn's campus, across from Franklin Field).
