July 27, 2017 7:00-9:00PM Abington Art Center World Music Series: Mbongwana Star, Congo
FREE ADMISSION | Donations Welcome
“The future of a country lies in the ability of its inhabitants to invent a utopia that its future can bear,” writes the Congolese writer Muepu Muamba. Mbongwana Star solves this promise. The band is self-described as “a seven-headed orchestra” from the politically dysfunctional capital city, Kinshasa, a place always on the brink of collapse. Mbongwana Star creates an Afro-futuristic sound that authentically represents the Congo, which developed a space travel program in the 70’s and now supplies the Coltan for our mobile phones. Coco Ngambali and Theo Nzonza, who lead the band, came from ‘Staff Benda Bilili,’ a group of polio-impaired wheelchair users, who performed on the streets using Kinshasa’s tin cans and African radio rhythms. They hired a group of local young musicians who transformed the popular melodies and rhythms of the Congo into an uncharted cosmos far beyond the power of Western Africas. Their debut album, From Kinshasa, was released in 2015 to universal acclaim.
This summer, Abington Art Center is partnering with Philadelphia’s Lucky Goat Coffee House to present the first annual World Music Series. World-class performers from Cuba, Columbia, Haiti, Nigeria, and the USA will be performing on our outdoor stage over six Thursday evenings from June 22 – July 27 at 7:00 pm. These culturally unique performances are unlike any in the Philadelphia region. This is the first year of the AAC reimagined concert series, although our program and production team have over 30 years of experience presenting international arts.
The event is open and free to the public, and guests are encouraged to come early and picnic on the lawn. Music has always had the power to bring communities together and cross the boundaries of geography, economics, religion and culture. Pitch and beat connect to the emotions, creating a direct line to the human ability to respond, understand and have compassion. This is what is great – when an audience is transported by sound to greater sense of our potential. This year the party will be at Abington Art Center.

July 22, 2017 8:00PM Amadou & Mariam at World Cafe Live PHL
Mixing traditional African rhythms with Western pop, using traditional instruments as well as beat boxes and synthesizers, playing rock, reggae, funk, soul and blues, mixing acoustic and digital productions, lyrics in French, English and Malian, Amadou & Mariam articulate the past and the future beautifully through their production, composition and collaborations that unite opposites and allow them to represent Mali across the world. But mostly, by enriching their Afro-pop with new pigments, by introducing to the world the richness and subtleties of African music, the duo has brought African music to the charts and to the dance floor. They’ve inspired many artists to mix Afro and electro sounds, such as MHD, DJ Mujava, Awesome Tapes From Africa, Four Tet or Jamie xx. This is proof that, if in the 80s certain crazy minds had fantasies of a Sono Mondiale, Amadou& Mariam are the ones who have made it a reality.

July 19, 2017 5:00-8:00PM Summer Nights at Penn Museum: Philadelphia Songwriters Project Winners
This summer, discover an outdoor concert experience that in-the-know Philadelphians have been enjoying for years. The Penn Museum’s eighth annual Summer Nights Concert Series brings an eclectic lineup of performances—including Creole Zydeco, Calypso, ‘20s Jazz, Middle Eastern folk, and more—to the relaxing garden setting of the Museum’s Stoner Courtyard. Admission is just $10 (free for PennCard holders, Penn Medicine and CHOP employees with ID; Penn Museum Members, and children under 6 years old). Concerts are presented every Wednesday evening, June 21 through September 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
The series is geared to visitors of any age, from friends meeting after work to families with children. Museum general admission is included with concert admission, and galleries stay open to 8:00 pm. At the 6:30 pm set break, attendees may take a short guided gallery tour. Outside, kids can color and play at a craft station.
The Pepper Mill Café offers a garden bar with wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages, and light foods for sale. Attendees are welcome to bring their own picnics, blankets, chairs, and even dogs (but no alcohol, please). Concerts move indoors during inclement weather.

July 18, 2017 7:30PM Grover Washington, Jr. Reunion Concert at Temple University Performing Arts Center
Grover Washington, Jr. Reunion Concert
Featuring Gerald Albright, Najee, and Jean Carn
July 18th, 2017 @ 7:30PM
Temple University Performing Arts Center
Grover Washington, Jr., one of the most influential and well-regarded saxophonists of all time, left us too soon. He passed away in 1999 at age 56. Philadelphia Jazz Project, 88.5 WXPN, and WRTI 90.1 FM in Philadelphia team up with NPR’s nationally syndicated radio show Jazz Night in America and other local partners to present this historic reunion concert— a tribute to Grover— with original members of Grover’s band at the Temple University Performing Arts Center (TPAC) on Tuesday, July 18th at 7:30 pm.
*The concert will be recorded for broadcast on public radio stations throughout the United States in the fall.*
Headliners Gerald Albright and Najee , who regarded Grover as a mentor, will perform alongside music director and keyboardist Bill Jolly , keyboardist Donald Robinson , guitarist Richard Lee Steacker , bassist Gerald Veasley , drummer Steve Wolf , and percussionist Pablo Batista . The band will be joined by special guest vocalist Jean Carn .
This concert marks the first time in almost 20 years that these original members of Grover’s band are sharing the stage to remember and celebrate “a great musician, mentor, and human being” says Bill Jolly. “We all loved Grover.”
Grover’s mastery in jazz, soul-jazz, R&B, jazz-fusion, jazz-funk, and jazz-pop pushed music beyond boundaries, and an entire genre of music, smooth jazz, owes its origin to his effortless, quicksilver playing. But there was more. As Robert Palmer wrote in Rolling Stone , “his sound is attractively personal; he combines liquid grace with an understated residue of R&B grit.”
