Opening Celebration: Folk Arts for Social Change
Thursday, July 20
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Community History Gallery in the Philadelphia History Museum
15 South 7th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106
Join us to celebrate the opening of Folk Arts for Social Change: Celebrating 30 Years of the Philadelphia Folklore Project.
Since 1987, the Philadelphia Folklore Project has chronicled and promoted the city’s rich folk life. By examining the customs of people who have been here generations and those who have just arrived, the Project deepens public understandings of local arts and the communities that create them. Folk Arts for Social Change showcases one of the Folklore Project’s signature community-based initiatives, an exhibition exploring the ways Philadelphia artists honor ancestors of African-rooted dance and drum traditions.
This all-ages event is free. Doors open at 5:30 P.M. Remarks, interactive performance, and dance circle (with live drumming) -- led by Jeannine Osayande and Dunya Performing Arts Company -- to follow.
