A walking tour of the neighborhood around the “Centro de Oro” or “Golden Block” in North Philly, plus a tour of Taller Puertorriqueno’s new cultural center, plus a salsa lesson with Philly Latin music ambassador Jesse Bermudez–all in one evening? Yep!

HIDDEN CITY and SIEMPRE SALSA PHILLY in association with TALLER PUERTORRIQUENO and HACE present an eclectic exploration of the history, art and culture of the predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood centering on 5th Street north of Lehigh.

We’ll start with a tour by HACE (Community Economic Development Corp.) of an area rich in history and lore that for decades has been at the center of daily life for Latinos living in our region. From Taller Puertorriqueno–the cultural heart of the barrio–to the historic Centro Musical record store, to the shops and businesses along El Centro de Oro, this is a neighborhood that pulses with energy as residents stay true to cultural traditions while meeting the challenges of contemporary urban life with a “warm heart” and to the beat of salsa music.

After that, we’ll tour of the Gallery at Taller Puertorriqueno’s brand new “El Corazon Cultural Center”. Destined to be the gateway access point for future visits to the barrio, the impressive structure is but the latest transformation for an organization that has been “building community through art since 1974”.

Since no visit to the barrio is complete without a “taste of salsa”, the tour of Taller’s Gallery will be immediately followed by the presentation of “Salsa 101” – A Basic Introduction to Salsa Music” by Philadelphia’s longtime Latin Music Ambassador, Jesse Bermudez, and a basic salsa dance lesson by Flaco (Flaco’s Dance Factory), the duo behind The Painted Bride Arts Center’s hugely successful “Salsa Caliente!” series.

For too long, the cultural gem that is Philadelphia’s barrio community has remained “hidden”–come see what you’ve been missing!

This tour is part of our City’s Annual Siempre Salsa Philly Week celebration of salsa music that runs from July 5th-11th. See Facebook: Siempre Salsa Philly’s Facebook page for a complete listing of events scheduled July 5th-11th.
