La Tribu de Abrante, led by singer, songwriter and chief arranger Hiram Abrante (who sang backup for Tego Calderón and other artists before forming his own group in 2007), melds traditional bomba and plena melodies with salsa, Latin jazz, funk, reggaeton and urban pop. Hiram’s brothers and son are part of the group, which gained a following playing in small clubs in San Juan before signing with White Lion Records, the Puerto Rican urban indie label whose roster has included Calderon, rapper Voltio and Calle 13. La Tribu de Abrante was a best tropical artist category nominee, and its studio debut, Otro Formato de Musica, was nominated for tropical album of the year, in Billboard’s Latin Music Awards earlier this year. Expect a lively dance party punctuated by punchy chants, burning horns and layers of danceable rhythms at their Philadelphia show.

Opening for La Tribu de Abrante will be Combo Chimbita, a quartet of first-generation New Yorkers with Colombian roots that features the powerful vocals of Carolina Oliveros. After releasing two EPs, the group was recommended by Brooklyn magazine in June as “a NYC band you need to hear” and released its debut album, Abya Yala, on the Figure & Ground label. Combo Chimbita explores visual identity (three of the four members wear masks) and champions Tropical Futurism, “the idea that the future doesn’t necessarily have to be this super white Western high-tech Star Wars stuff; that the indigenous ideas and culture of people of color, people of Latin America, can also represent a magical and substantial future.”
