This next installment of AAMP Commune centers on our exhibition Cotton: The Soft Dangerous Beauty of the Past, and features percussionist and performance artist LaTreice Branson. Along with exploring this month’s AAMP Commune theme of WAILING through open conversation, Branson will also share a few selections from her deep repertoire of music.

January 25, 2019 8:00-10:00PM The Fire Museum Presents: LV Benga Africa at The Rotunda

Image may contain: one or more people and people standing
FREE/Donation

LV Benga Africa brings the unique sound of Kenya’s popular benga style to American stages. Benga is a guitar-driven dance music that emerged in the 1960s fusing Kenyan folksongs with the Latin-American rumba. As the only resident band of its kind in the United States, LV Benga Africa provides audiences with a taste of this exciting sound. With their years of experience performing in nightclubs across Kenya, and as veterans of the Nairobi recording scene, they deliver a live show with authenticity and originality.

LV Benga Africa’s sound has been forged over several years, having roots in Nairobi. Between 2000 and 2004, its members were performing and recording with various bands around the city, and were joined by American ethnomusicologist Ian Eagleson who was doing research on benga. Vocalist/drummer Steve Omari joined Eagleson in 2006 to play in the critically acclaimed, international touring band Extra Golden. In 2007, Freddy Collela (son of benga pioneer Collela Mazee), Mulumbu Jamarachi and Joseph Ooko arrived in the US as part of Dola Kabarry’s Orchestra Super Haki Haki. After establishing a base in Allentown, PA these musicians continued where they had left off in Kenya, becoming in-demand as entertainers for Kenya’s vibrant expatriate community in the US.

Since 2008, LV Benga Africa has performed at the Bethlehem Musikfest and at Steel Stacks; they backed the late benga star Musa Juma on his 2010 American tour; recorded a full length album as part of the group DT Unique Kenzi, and have frequently performed throughout the Northeast for Kenyan community dances. They are currently completing their debut album.

With their rich vocal harmonies, intricate guitar interplay, and irresistible rhythms laid down by bass and drums, LV Benga Africa strive to fulfill their mission: to bring people of all ages and backgrounds to their feet to dance to the original sound of Kenya.

Christine Havrilla
Award-winning Philadelphia native Christine Havrilla brings her “well-built, catchy, smart tunes” (Upstage Magazine) to audiences everywhere, touring nationally solo and also with the support of her band, Gypsy Fuzz. Christine utilizes the soft gritty texture of her vocals to express warmth and honesty listeners quickly embrace as well as her aggressive, raw, trash-style guitar playing and looping. Main Line Today Magazine lists Christine as one the 25 “Power Women” ready to lead (October 2015). “Christine Havrilla is a creative, talented powerhouse wrapped up in one complete package!” exclaims Nor’easter Magazine (Aug 2015). Mike “Jacobs” McKenna of Steel Notes Magazine reviews & says “This CD (Vol. 2- The Sunset Sessions) just defies description. It is hot, tight, precise and just plain kicks ass. This ambitious Philly native manifests her talent in certain ways that allows her to create eclectic music which will grab your heart and leave a lasting memory. Her Roots/Folk/Americana background coupled with that unique individuality that she possesses allows her to be a presence that steps into many genres and gives her the tools to crossover to different music formats.

Special Video Presentation by
Nicholas Krolak

whose forthcoming album will be released in Spring 2019
"Bassist Nicholas Krolak is a young veteran of the Philadelphia jazz scene. He has spent the last decade working as a side-man, experiencing new styles, and studying with the masters. Now, he has taken all he has learned and is applying it to his own group. Tracing the lineage of bebop into the contemporary, his compositions celebrate the city and honor nature. His first album, 'Chicory Root' has showcased his ability to write instrumental compositions, while his sophomore recording 'This is Our Moment' expands his creative vision to include spoken word poetry and songs with lyrics. 'This is Our Moment', recorded live at Rittenhouse Soundworks, (slated for a spring 2019 release), added vocalist V. Shayne Frederick backed up by Krolak's quintet."
