October 5, 2025 3:00PM Ensemble Novo: Exploring a Century of Brazilian Song

Join us in North Philly with Ensemble Novo. Ensemble Novo explores the uplifting, endlessly rhythmic music of Brazil through the lens of improvisation. On this program, the 5-piece group celebrates classic samba, bossa nova and Musica Popular Brazileira in a spirit of spontaneous adventure.

About Ensemble Novo:

Ensemble Novo celebrates the windswept melodies and perpetual-motion rhythms of Brazilian music. The five-piece band has been performing in the Philadelphia region for a decade, and has recorded a series of mini-albums that have been played on WXPN-FM and WRTI-FM as well as stations in Rio de Janeiro and across the globe. Its sound is a balance of moods and textures: The crystalline clarity of the vibraphone is crossed with the husky introspection of the tenor saxophone, lively sparks from nylon-string guitar are animated by the crisp pulse of percussion. In its review of This Is Ensemble Novo, The Vinyl District raved that Ensemble Novo puts "a playful spin on some of the world’s most welcoming music, Brazilian pop from the 1960s and 1970s. The music is executed with a jazz touch and musical virtuosity by musicians who may not be household names, but deserve to be.

September 30, 2025 6:30PM "We Drink the Drum" at Harriett's Bookshop featuring Karen Smith and Batala Philly

 We Drink The Drum

What we know is this: storytellers are sacred, yet often we labor in silos of silence.

Too many of us spend more time chasing the means to create than we do creating. And though our region is steeped in a deep, undeniable literary tradition, there are too few spaces (like actual spaces owned by us), and too little funding (like who solely funds writers in our region?) for our genres, visions, and voices to harmonize and blend.

This evening, we gather to change that.

Join us for a sacred convening of word workers from playwrights and poets, screenwriters to novelists, essayists to truth-tellers — in a matchmaking of the literary minded. Together, we will explore wordwork as ritual and storytelling as holy and undeniable while listening to various drummers.

While we drink the drum by Batala & Karen Smith, enjoy the soft opening of our new cafe and local drummers of different backgrounds throughout the evening.

Hosted by Jeannine A. Cook, of Harriett’s Bookshop, as she kicks off her debut novel tour for Its Me They Follow w/ several special guests and friends.

September 27, 2025 7:30PM Breakwater at City Winery Philadelphia

 Breakwater - 9.27.2025

City Winery Philadelphia presents Breakwater live on Saturday, September 27th at 7:30pm.

On the third day of 2010, a nearly impossible dream became a reality -- Breakwater reunited. Five of the original eight band members gathered at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia for a homecoming that was 30 years in the making. Breakwater's dedicated fans had longed for a reunion ever since Splashdown prematurely concluded the band's story in 1980. "Breakwater is part of the culture in Philadelphia," explains bassist Steve Green. "There's an age group of people who grew up with our band." Playing before a sold-out crowd, Breakwater reassumed their place on the mantle as one of Philadelphia's most beloved homegrown bands. An audience ranging from early 20-somethings to 60 year-olds experienced what discerning crate diggers and DJs around the world have known for years: when Breakwater splashes down, expect to get soaked by a wave of grooves.
