The Philadelphia Folklore Project presents:
LIBERIAN ARTISTS: CHANGING THE WORLD THROUGH SONG
Liberian Artists: Changing the World Through Song. Tuesday, March 5, 2013. 6 PM - 8 PM, The Cedar Works, 4919 Pentridge Street, Philadelphia, PA 19143. (One block south of Baltimore, off of 50th Street.) The program is FREE, however seating is limited. Plan to come a bit early to get a spot.
The Philadelphia Folklore Project presents noted Liberian recording artists and social justice activists in an evening of performance and discussion on Tuesday, March 5th, from 6 PM - 8 PM. The free event was originally scheduled to take place at the Folklore Project, but to accommodate community interest, it has been moved to The Cedar Works, 4919 Pentridge Avenue in West Philadelphia, just around the corner.

The program features Liberian singer/songwriters Fatu Gayflor, Zaye Tete and Tokay Tomah, who will share songs and stories of struggle and hope, and introduce the history and current concerns of the 35,000-strong local Liberian community. During and immediately after the brutal back-to-back civil wars in their country in the 1980s and 1990s, Liberian artists harnessed the power of music to foster reconciliation. Some, including the artists presented in this program, dedicated their music to peace-building in refugee camps and in their homeland. They have continued to address inequities and violence through song, both in West Africa and here in Philadelphia, ever since.

As a result of the late-20th century turmoil, a number of performers from Liberia's National Cultural Troupe resettled in the Philadelphia region. The three Liberian women featured in this program were singers and dancers in the National Cultural Troupe, as well as renowned recording stars. They continue to draw on their traditions to compose and perform songs reflecting upon their personal and community histories.

Many local Liberians experience anti-immigrant bias, violence, racism, poverty, and deportations. There are high rates of gender violence and sexual assault. People's current circumstances stem in large part from the legacies of war, loss, exile and trauma. These issues are the subjects of these women's concerns, and their art-making.
Fatu Gayflor
The program on March 5th provides a chance to learn about the history and context of their music-making, to enjoy their performances of recent compositions, and to discuss the issues facing the Liberian community and all of us.
Fatu Gayflor was recording an album in the Ivory Coast when war in her homeland of Liberia kept her from returning to her family. In the early 1990s, in exile, Gayflor traveled with the United Nations to refugee camps throughout West Africa, performing as a way of instilling hope in the Liberian refugee population. The World Food Program took Fatu to Milan, Italy, in 1996 to perform with artists from across Africa to publicize the continent's vast hunger crisis. Since moving to the U.S., she continues to compose and perform. Gayflor participated in a 2012 training on peace-building through the arts run by Brandeis University, and was honored that same year with a Leeway Foundation Transformation Award for her decades of art and social change work.Zaye Tete was also a member of Liberia's National Cultural Troupe where she toured as a singer and dancer. Tete was living with her fellow National Cultural Troupe artists just outside the capital of Monrovia when she decided she had to escape the escalating violence. While in a refugee camp in the Ivory Coast, she started a Liberian children's cultural troupe. Tete also traveled from refugee camp to refugee camp, and even crossed back over the border into war-torn Liberia, to sing to soldiers to ask them to put down their weapons. Here in the U.S. she performs at Liberian celebrations and clubs, and continues to compose and record. Her most recent CD, entitled For the Sake of the Children, came out in 2011. She was awarded a Leeway Foundation Art and Change grant in 2009 to teach traditional songs and dances to Liberian American youth. In January, 2013, she returned from a three-week performance tour of Australia
Tokay Tomah started working with the United Nations on disarmament and reconciliation, through music, in the mid-1990s. In addition to her peace-building work, she carried out awareness campaigns on HIV/AIDS, rape, sexual exploitation and abuse, and other issues, all through performance. She served as the executive director of a Liberian non-governmental organization, Women and Society, advocating for equity for women. She has produced seven CDs, and has been honored with awards from the Musicians' Union of Liberia, Africare Liberia, and the Liberian Ministry of Agriculture. Her 2010 album, Open the Door, shares a message about taking responsibility for one's impact on one's own community. While visiting the United States in 2007, Tomah was a featured speaker on a panel about the relationship between art and war at the University of Maryland. She moved to the United States permanently in 2011, and recorded her latest CD, What You Know About Me, in 2012.

Summer 2013 Philly Drum Project hosts "DrumPhil" workshop

On August 13th, 2013, Philly Drum Project will hold its first educational program, DrumPhil: a one-day drumset workshop for high school students. We are partnering with The University of the Arts to offer this program in the heart of The Avenue of the Arts in Center City Philadelphia. Through an application process, we will select 12 high school students, who will have a unique opportunity to study with top university instructors and professional drummers in the city during a day filled with group workshops, individual lessons, a panel discussion on the music business, and drumset ensemble composition sessions, culminating with a recital for family, friends and the Philly Drum Project community. We don't want to turn any student away because of his/her financial situation, so in order to keep the program fee at $20 per student, we are asking you, our members, for support.

Center City’s only nightlife scene featuring two Latin big bands at each event returns for its third season offering everyone a special opportunity to immerse themselves in tropical flavors. Before the party swings into full action, maestro Flaco of Flaco’s Dance Factory is standing by to guide beginners through their first instructional dance steps.

THE VISION / HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED
Looking to shake things up, the Bride’s programming team scheduled a sit down with long-time community partner Jesse Bermudez, founder of La Asociación de Músicos Latino Americanos (AMLA). Known for championing cultural and educational commitments within the Latino community and his extensive regional network of Latin musicians/orquesta, Jesse proposed creating a nightlife scene where Latin music and culture could be shared with people from all walks of life. Jesse’s vision recalls the hot salsa nights during the golden era of Latin dancing at the Palladium Ballroom in the 50’s where bands were both the sticky factor and driving force of the social scene. While plenty of nightclubs in the tri-state have a Latin night, today’s dominating trend surrounds the DJ. As national television programs continue to highlight Latin dance styles (Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance), the love for salsa music and dancing gains mainstream popularity once again. Alongside Bermudez, the Bride is pleased to present the third dynamic season of Salsa Caliente. Come join the party!

Dendê & Band will be releasing their second album, Back to Bahia in March 2013 with performance dates on both the East and West Coasts in March 2013. Combining Brazil’s rhythm heavy music with the grooves of afrobeat, reggae, merengue, and others from around the world Back to Bahia draws upon the energy in Bahia to reinfuse Dendê’s music with that unmistakable Bahian sound. In January 2012, Dendê returned to Bahia to record and perform with his own band for the first time since partially relocating to New York in 2001. Taking advantage of being in Bahia for the recording, the album showcases the band’s sizzling showmanship and versatility while including a host of friends who make special appearances such as Ilê Aiyê, Melvin Gibbs, Graham Haynes, Vinicius Cantuária, Magary Lord, Luizinho do Gege (Daniela Mercury) and Gerson Silva & Mikael Mutti (Carlinhos Brown) among many others.

Dendê is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he’s been splitting his time between New York and Bahia, and has played with Mongo Santamaria, Giovanni Hidalgo, Zakir Hussain, David Byrne, Melvin Gibbs and Vinicius Cantuária. His own bands include the folkloric music and dance troupe Ologundê, the acoustic Samba de Três, and Arrastão do Dendê, a traditional Afro bloco (samba party band), but it’s as leader and principal songwriter of his flagship band that Dendê has made his greatest impact.

The band has been packing clubs and festivals throughout the US and internationally over the past few years most notably at the Atrium at Lincoln Center, the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, Roulette through the World Music Institute; the Lake Eden Arts Festival in North Carolina, the Kalalu Festival in Saint Lucia, Joe’s Pub, World Café Live and Johnny D’s in Boston. This year, the tour will include cities throughout the US including Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego and Malaysia.

From New Orleans to Brazil and Venice to Trinidad, the last days before Lent are the occasion for some of the world’s best street parties – and most exciting street music. This year, Crossroads will celebrate Carnival with Brazilian samba from our old friends Unidos da Filadelfia and Trinidad steel drums from the award-winning Philadelphia Pan Stars Steel Orchestra.

Begun in the Spring of 2005, Unidos Da Filadelfia is the city of Philadelphia’s premier Escola De Samba in the tradition of Carnaval parade organizations in Brazil like the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro and blocos afros of Salvador da Bahia. Founded in 2005, the school’s mission is to spread the joy and excitement of Brazilian percussion through music education and performance. Members of the school learn to play the traditional percussion instruments and learn the rhythmic styles of Brazilian Carnaval, and perform at various community events throughout the city.

The Philadelphia Pan Stars are based in Southwest Philadelphia, but perform traditional and original steel band music at festivals and competitions throughout the northeastern US and the Caribbean region.

From Rio to Trinidad to New Orleans, whether it is known as Carnaval, Carnival, or Mardi Gras, is a signature event. To honor the spirit of street parades, live music, and costumes, Carnival Tropical will celebrate the Latin American and Caribbean tradition in Philly style with all local talent. This two-part event on Sunday, February 17, Presidents Day weekend will showcase the talented diversity right here in our home city with the best of analog and digital Carnival musical stylings for a night of dancing on this long holiday weekend that will bring the best of Carnivals near and far under two roofs.

As part of the Crossroads Music series, a double bill of Philly-based percussion ensembles will ring in the Carnival spirit. The Philadelphia Pan Stars, a Trinidadian steel drum band based in the Elmwood neighborhood, will bring the sweet sound of “pan” (as it’s known in Trinidad), beginning with a 6:30 pm special kids show. They will be followed by Unidos da Filadelfia, a community-based samba school modeled on the Carnival bands of Rio de Janeiro, who will lead the crowd after their performance in a procession down Baltimore Avenue to the second part of the event.

DJs Juanderful and Gregzinho (both of Tropicalismo), who will play vintage Carnival vinyl – samba, salsa, calypso – before and during intermission at Calvary, will be joined by Brotha Onaci (Sonic Diaspora) for the best in 21st century Carnival rhythms: Caribbean soca, reggae, and dancehall; Latin American cumbia and reggaetón; Brazilian baile funk and brega. The Dahlak dance party will also feature Philly’s El Malito & The 33rd Century, a Puerto Rican MC from the future with a special Carnival live show. Inside Dahlak, vendors, a mask contest, and a photo booth will create a multimedia experience of Carnival cultures while costumed dancers from the Caribbean-American Heritage Foundation of Pennsylvania will get the crowd moving in their sequined finest.

The Minas duo, featuring Orlando Haddad (guitar, vocals) and Patricia King (piano, keys and vocals), has been in the Philadelphia area for over 25 years. They've performed in all major venues, including The Kimmel Center, The Mann, The Academy of Music, The Annenberg. Their events at World Cafe Live have sold out. Minas has won "Best of Philly" twice from Philadelphia Magazine. and their latest CD "Bossa Nova Day" was indicated for 3 Grammy Awards. Minas will be performing originals from their 5 CDs (Blueazul Records), as well as Bossa Nova classics.

Orlando Haddad and Patricia King formed Minas in 1978 at North Carolina School of the Arts to bring Brazilian music to stateside audiences. They proceeded to play all over the eastern US before going back to their musical roots in Brazil, where they entertained, traveled extensively and recorded their first album, Num Dia Azul.

Today Minas is one of the most sought after Brazilian bands in the United States. Minas is built upon the duo's multiple talents as vocalists, instrumentalists and composers with an impressive grasp of the whole range of Brazilian musical idioms. At the core of any Minas show are the voices of the duo, which reflects two decades of vocal and instrumental blending. Warm and engaging, this magical sound becomes infectious when Minas adds bass, drums, percussion and horns to Orlando's guitar and Patricia's keyboards.

This January, Raíces will begin the year with its signature community program, the Tertulia!



Philadelphia has a growing Brazilian community in the northeast section of the city. In collaboration with Brazil Productions, Raíces will shed light on this unique community, and explore the vibrant culture of Brazilians at this first signature Tertulia program of 2013.


The heart-pounding rhythms, graceful dances, and colorful costumes of samba are recognized worldwide as part of Brazil's cultural identity. Fatima Peters, Founder and Owner of Brazil Productions, will make a presentation about samba at the Tertulia.



Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Ms. Peters has a wealth of knowledge on samba, as a self-taught samba dancer, dance director, and costume designer. Her 25-year-old company, Brazil Productions, brings Brazil to the U.S. through performances and entertainment.

Following Fatima Peters' presentation, the audience will enjoy an interactive samba dance performance by Brazil Production and Fuego Dance Company. Directed by Hector Serrano, Fuego Dance Company is the oldest and largest Salsa dance company in Philadelphia.


This event is open to the public; however, for adults only. We suggest a $10 donation for admission or a $5 donation for admission for college students.



Upon admission we invite you to enjoy our host of light, healthy fare and soft drinks & wine. We will have a few Brazilian specialty items for attendees to try as well.Please note, the majority of the program will be conducted in English, however there will be people available to translate some parts in Spanish and Portuguese.






On the last Friday of the month, Raíces presents its signature Tertulia. This event - generally for adults only- is one of Raíces' most popular programs that presents lectures and discussions on cultural topics. During each Tertulia, after the invited guests' presentation and open public discussions, the microphone is opened to any individual or group who would like to share their talents in music, poetry, dance, etc. Raíces calls this cultural encounter in the café atmosphere "a retreat for the soul."

Femi Kuti was born Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti on June 12, 1962 in London. He grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, where, at 15, he started playing saxophone in his father’s band, Egypt 80. In 1986 he formed his own band, the Positive Force. His first record was released in 1995 by Tabu/Motown, followed four years later by Shoki Shoki (MCA), which garnered widespread critical acclaim. In 2001 he collaborated with Common and Mos Def on Fight to Win, an effort to cross over to a mainstream audience, and started touring the United States with Jane’s Addiction. In 2004 he opened The Shrine, his club, where he recorded the live album Africa Shrine. After a 4-year absence due to personal setbacks, he re-emerged in 2008 with Day by Day and Africa for Africa in 2010, for which he received two Grammy nominations. In 2012 he was both inducted into the Headies Hall of Fame (the most prestigious music awards in Nigeria) and was the opening act on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ European Tour. He continues to expand the diversity of his artistry on his forthcoming (2013) album No Place for My Dream. Kariamu is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants and awards including a National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowship, the Creative Public Service Award of NY, a Pew Choreography Fellowship, a Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grant, a Fulbright Specialist award and a Senior Fulbright Scholar Award. She is the founding artistic director of the National Dance Company of Zimbabwe in southern Africa. Kariamu is the creator of the Umfundalai dance technique, a contemporary technique that has been in existence for over forty years. Kariamu has written several books and many articles on African dance.

Debo Band is an 11-member group led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Since their inception in 2006, the band has won raves for their groundbreaking take on Ethiopian pop music (think Ethiopiques), which incorporates traditional scales and vocal styles, alongside American soul and funk rhythms, and instrumentation reminiscent of Eastern European brass bands. Debo have toured Ethiopia twice, appearing at both the Ethiopian Music Festival in Addis Ababa and Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar, the largest music festival in East Africa. Her Spirit Was For Dancing (2013, 60 mins) chronicles the death rituals performed for Phyllis Gordon, a 92-year-old Etu member and Yoruba descendant in Jamaica, West Indies. The deceased is honored with a Christian funeral in addition to age-old African celebrations that involve the community. This film is an intimate look into the coexistence of Christian and African traditions.
Morenike Olabunmi is a Jamaican-born independent filmmaker, writer, and researcher. Her documentary, Etu & Nago: The Yoruba Connection which illumines the story of Yoruba/Nago descendants in Jamaica, West Indies, received Best Documentary Short awards at Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film and Jamerican Film and Music Festivals. It also won the Jurors' Choice award from the Brooklyn Chapter of Links Film Festival.
Ms. Olabunmi’s philosophy has been to use all available media to illuminate Africa’s contribution to world society. "As a student of African folklore I'm interested in its use in culture, its manifestations of expressive forms in both traditional and modern societies in which the themes, symbols, and protocol that permeate traditional life occupy new positions, or occur in different occasions in everyday life both on the African continent and in the African diaspora."
