The annual Arturo A. Schomburg Symposium explores different aspects of the complex relationship of the African diaspora to Latin American culture. With presentations by distinguished scholars, this event offers the opportunity to deepen knowledge and understanding, foster dialogue, and educate audiences and speakers alike.

This year’s symposium, Afro-Latino Masks: Roots, Representations and Cultural Practices, explores how mask-making traditions in the Caribbean and South America have influenced, positively or negatively, perceptions of cultural pride and racial identity. To provide a comprehensive perspective, the program will include presentations by distinguished scholars, a discussion panel, plenaries and Q&A sessions. / El simposio cada año explora la compleja relación de la diáspora africana y las culturas Latinas, una oportunidad para aprender, dialogar y aumentar nuestra comprensión. Máscaras Afro-latinas: Raíces, Representaciones y Prácticas Culturales explorarará, a través de las raíces de la máscara,, los diferentes mecanismos que impactan la formación y el desarrollo del sentido de cultura e identificación racial.
