Beats, Brews, & Banter, our FREE monthly series, continues this Monday, March 3rd, in the Back Room at RBar, 2222 Walnut Street. The event will run from 7-9pm and feature a well-established Philadelphia jazz musician/drummer/brushmaster/snare drum connoisseur, Dan Monaghan! Dan was on the teaching staff for our DrumPhil summer program last August and is currently an adjunct instructor of jazz studies at Temple University. After studying classical percussion for eight years he went on to earn a Bachelors of Music in jazz studies from Temple. Since then he has performed with some of the top names in jazz, including Eric Alexander, Peter Bernstein, Joe Magnarelli, and Randy Brecker. In addition, he has recorded with Jimmy Bruno, Elio Villafranca, Joanna Pascale, Larry McKenna, Tom Tallitsch, Meg Clifton, and Mike Kennedy. He is also a frequent clinician at schools, colleges and festivals, and we're excited to have him present at our hang!
If you've been to a BBB event in the past, you'll know that Philly Drum Project is dedicated to helping drummers share resources. One of the resources that we share is BEATS, which partially entails gigging and collaborating opportunities, so here's one to consider. Peter English, a director over at the great musical collaboration organization Weathervane Music (and a PDP member himself!) is looking to do some collaboration of his own and is reaching out to the Philly Drum Project community. It seems like a very fun project, so if you're interested in getting involved, reply to this email and I'll put you in touch with Peter! Here's what he said:
"Sad Paul Simon tries hip-hop?
I'm looking for a group of percussionists to create a rhythmic back-bone to a new project. I have some disparate interests, and I'm exploring how they relate to each other. I love the strong rhythms of hip hop and drumline, the synth textures of electronica, the guitar rhythms/tones of disco/funk, and the song craft of classic artists like Paul Simon and Prince. On top of all this, when I sit down to write, I end up writing really sad songs. You can hear a few here. As I put together the live pieces, I'd like to start off with the rhythm section, working on grooves in a group setting. Live, we will have extended sections to groove and improvise (interest in stage-craft is a must). If anyone is interested, please get in touch with your experience, influences and/or gear."
That's all for now. Please share this facebook event for Monday's event with your drumming/music-loving friends! As always, the event is FREE.
