From AfroTaino Productions:
"A Seed on Diamond Gallery is a special intimate space. Besides being surrounded by prolific art, the gallery caters to a freeform spirit of experimentalism that defines the DIY attitude of Philadephian artistry. When we (AfroTaino Productions) have partnered with the gallery to present a series of up-close & personal music concerts, we were thrilled at not only the turnout, but also how everyone else picked up on this frequency (for lack of a better word). There were no expectations, no crisis-laden details that often prevent us from partaking in the same good time that the attendees have. We were not burdened with the kind of concerns that are often associated with major performing arts centers, like ‘how many tickets presold?’ or ‘where are the best seats in the house?’ or ‘are the sponsors’ names listed correctly at will call?’ In fact, the gallery gave us enough breathing room to come out from behind the curtain and enjoy our own event from the perspective of the patron. Even for artists like Gina Chavez, who have to constantly morph into the ‘star’ when onstage, found A Seed on Diamond Gallery the perfect environment for her presentation earlier this year. No actual stage, but her designated spot stood warmly amongst patrons, some who were seated, standing, and even squatting, and who joked and laughed like old friends, yet never losing interest in the artist. It was as cozy as a living room, but as encouraging as a pep rally. This element, this fun factor, allows everyone in the space to simply BE. That said, we are proud to present another open-minded, culturally-conscious live music experiment, featuring a double-headliner bill with some of the freshest fruits of Afro-Mexico: ¡Aparato! (from Southern California) and Jarana Beat (from Brooklyn). ¡Aparato! creates a unique hybrid of Son Jarocho & Post-Punk/Artcore. The resulting sound is pan-African but combines traditional Mexican styles with progressive rock. Vocalist/guitarist Cat brings a feminist cry to the group’s sound, but unlike the wail of her punk foremothers, Cat’s voice is unabashedly feminine. Jarana Beat fuses elements of Mexico’s African and Amerindian traditions with other Latin American rhythms in its present-day take on folkloric music. With contagious charm and good vibes, this band is capable of getting any audience on its feet, so take note and dress comfortably, and leave the expectations at home. You’re gonna have fun."
