Single Release from Upcoming CD Symphony in Bossa With Big Band and Strings
Minas’ brand new version of “The Girl From Ipanema”, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the song in the US, will be released and celebrated with a concert by the Brazilian jazz quintet for this special show. “Ipanema” is the first single
from Minas’ upcoming CD “Symphony in Bossa”, recorded with an entire big band, strings, and many guest artists.
At the concert, Minas will pay tribute not only to “The Girl From Ipanema”, but to the album from which it stems - the quintessential Getz/Gilberto. The album and single won several Grammy Awards including Record of the Year in 1965. Written by A. C. Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, Garota de Ipanema, the original title in Portuguese, was first released in Brazil in 1962. It gained immense popularity in 1964 in the US as a single with English lyrics by Norman Gimbel, featuring Stan Getz, João Gilberto, and A. C. Jobim, in the refreshing voice of Astrud Gilberto. The single went to number one on domestic and international charts and “Ipanema” is one of the most popular and recorded songs in history, translated to dozens of languages worldwide. At the end of the concert the audience will be invited to sing along with the band in both English and Portuguese. Anyone knowing other versions of the song in another language will be encouraged to share.
Based in Philadelphia for the last 30 years, Minas has had a consistent impact on the area’s cultural life, not only performing and exposing audiences to the music and culture of Brazil, but making a difference in the area of education. Orlando Haddad taught Brazilian Percussion and Jazz at UArts over 10 years and the program Brazilian Adventure, on the roster of Musicopia, has been presented to over half a million students in public and independent schools. With five CDs to its credit, including 3 Grammy indications, The Girl from Ipanema and Symphony in Bossa will be a very important milestone in Minas’ career!
Everyone attending will receive a free download of the new Minas single, The Gril from Ipanema, recorded with more than 50 musicians, including a big band and full strings.
The Minas Quintet, featuring special invited guest Andrew Neu (saxes and flutes), and with Orlando Haddad (guitar, vocals), Patricia King (piano, vocals), Jim Stager (bass), Tom Cohen (drums), will perform Jobim classics including Corcovado, Desafinado, Dreamer, Só Danço Samba, O Grande Amor, as featured on Getz/Gilberto, plus Minas’ originals influenced by the genre
