Siempre Salsa Philly is an initiative undertaken by Rob Bernberg (Latin Beat Magazine), Jesse Bermudez (A.M.L.A. founder) and Carlos Sanchez (Orquesta del Barrio) to grow the audience for authentic salsa music in the Philadelphia region via a series of educational and entertainment events throughout the year.

At Take the Lead Dance Project our belief is that social dance is important to the education, growth, and development of our youth. Through the practice of social dance, we strive inspire confidence, community, and joy in the lives of high school students in Philadelphia. Take the Lead Dance Project is a 10-week in-school arts education, social, and physical development social dance program designed to utilize partner dance instruction to impart social skills and attitudes broadly associated with the realm of social dance including discipline, teamwork, civility, appreciation of music, enhanced communication skills and respect for other cultures.

Take the Lead Dance Project celebrates diversity by exploring different cultures through their respective social dance traditions, including dances that originate in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Argentina, and the United States. Philadelphia inner-city high school classrooms are very diverse. Social dance breaks down social and cultural barriers, deepens intercultural appreciation, and allows students to work together joyfully to achieve a common goal.

Muzikaldunk is throwing a good ole House Party!!! ALL are invited to come! I specifically would like to invite any students that are artists and artists majors in college to come! After hanging at a few college Jam sessions in some homes it was observed that there needs to be more open doors to this idea! Being as though most of the students weren’t 21 yet the club scene isn’t really accessible but the music that gets created is OUT OF THIS WORLD!! Also my seasoned musicians really need to stay connected to upcoming artists its really what holds our musical community together!

A celebration of Latino culture in the heart of the city’s streets. Traditional Latino music, poetry, and dance make this vibrant festival a must see event. Held on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Puerto Rican Festival Parade typically has around 1,500 marchers; more than 5,000 attendees; and 96,000 tune in to watch live on 6abc

THEME: "Renacer de Puerto Rico" - The Rebirth of Puerto Rico
On September 16, 2017 the island of Puerto Rico was struck by Hurricane Maria, leaving its infrastructure completely dismantled. Since then, Puerto Rico's road to recovery has been met with optimism by its natives and those across the world who refuse to become disheartened by their home's current state. It is important to highlight the resiliency of a culture whose motivation for revival is exponential in the rebuilding and reconnecting of their community. Concilio hopes to honor the people of Puerto Rico this year for their strength and commitment to each other and to their roots. Renacer de Puerto Rico, the rebirth of Puerto Rico.

September 27, 2018 7:00PM Scribe Video Screening: Milford Graves Full Mantis

Event Type:
Screening
Producers' Forum
Scribe Video Center is thrilled to present MILFORD GRAVES FULL MANTIS (USA, 91 mins, 2018)
Director Jake Meginsky in person
MILFORD GRAVES FULL MANTIS is a portrait of renowned percussionist Milford Graves. Graves has performed internationally since 1964, both as a soloist and in ensembles with such legends as Albert Ayler, Giuseppi Logan and Sonny Sharrock. He is a pioneer of the 1960s avant-garde jazz movement, and remains one of the most influential living figures in the evolution of the form.
From his home, which contains both a musical laboratory and a dojo, Graves tells his own stories of discovery, struggle and survival, ruminates on the essence of 'swing,' activates electronic stethoscopes in his basement lab to process the sound of his heart, and travels to Japan where he performs at a school for children with autism.
Using archival video including footage from Doug Harris’ Speaking in Tongues, Meginsky weaves intimate glimpses of the artist’s complex cosmology with blistering performances from around the globe. MILFORD GRAVES FULL MANTIS is cinema full of fluidity, polyrhythm and intensity, embodying the essence of Graves’ music itself.
Composer/performer/filmmaker Jake Meginsky, a New Music USA award winner and Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow in filmmaking, has collaborated and performed with an extraordinary range of musicians including Milford Graves, Alvin Lucier, Joan La Barbara, and Vic Rawlings. His work has been presented widely and reviewed extensively in leading contemporary music, art and culture publications worldwide.
Preceded by:  John Coltrane Place: Giant Steps of Philadelphia, by the John Coltrane House Film Committee through Scribe Video Center’s Precious Places Community History project (USA, 2016, 9 minutes) This film focuses on John Coltrane, the legendary jazz musicians, during his time in Philadelphia, when he laid the foundation for his revolutionary approach to music. The film explores the community’s attempts to make his former home a cultural mecca for jazz aficionados around the world.

About Flor de Toloache - Mariachi Femenino
2017 Latin Grammy Winner Mariachi Flor de Toloache make New York City history as its’ First and Only All-Women Mariachi Group. Founded in 2008, Mariachi Flor de Toloache is led by singers Mireya I. Ramos (founder) & Shae Fiol (founding member). Reminiscent of the early days of mariachi the group started as a trio, Harp, Violin and Vihuela. Today, Mariachi Flor De Toloache performs as a full Mariachi ensemble.

The members hail from diverse cultural backgrounds such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany, Italy and the United States. This defines their unique flavor and sound. The result of this cultural bouquet is an edgy, versatile and fresh take on traditional Mexican music. They coalesce as would a band of sisters, with a grace and vibrant beauty that casts a spell over their audiences not unlike the legendary Toloache flower still being used in Mexico as a love potion. While working to preserve centuries old traditions of Mariachi, their melange of the traditional and the modern pushes the boundaries of the genre and brings Mariachi music to new audiences.
