Moore’s Pop-up Party! with live music by the world music band Jarana Beat and its Afro-Amerindian Mexico sound is in conjunction with an exhibition of student work that includes poster designs and animated projections in response to The Galleries at Moore’s “Strange Currencies: Art & Action in Mexico City, 1990-2000.” "Strange Currencies" will also be on view the entire evening as well.
Jarana Beat is a world music band that incorporates dance and activism. With the sounds of Afro-Amerindian Mexico, it offers a new interpretation that blends the origins of Mexican music with contemporary elements and draws from other cultures in the New York scene that share the same roots. With contagious charm and good vibes, this award winning band is capable of getting any audience on its feet! Musical director Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza has mined the musical traditions of his native Mexico and other Latin American countries in an ongoing search for a distinct style, resulting in the creation of this musical amalgam which debuted in Buenos Aires, Argentina as part of NYU’s 2007 Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics Encuentro. On August 20, 2015, Jarana Beat received the 2015 Mexican Music Award for Best Contemporary Folk Band of 2015.
