Making their Philadelphia debut with special guest Rhenda Fearrington, the Eco-Music Big Band presents COLORS OF RESISTANCE. Fusing free jazz, hip hop, heavy metal, Latin rhythms, and blues forms with the freshest voices in big band composition, COLORS OF RESISTANCE tells a story of music that rose out of resistance to oppression.

With conductor/composer Marie Incontrera at the helm, this political big band’s performance will include the both new and re-imagined works by the late composer and baritone saxophone virtuoso Fred Ho, new works by up-and-coming New York jazz composers Livio Almeida, Albert Marques, and Zack O’Farrill, and works by composer/activist and Philadelphia native Cal Massey. Featuring Philadelphia jazz vocalist Rhenda Fearrington, legendary bass trombonist David Taylor, and the trio Tres (Albert Marques, Walter Stinson, and Zack O’Farrill), the Eco-Music Big Band promises a one-of-a-kind experience that intends to propel the jazz idiom into the 21st century.

ECO-MUSIC IS FOUNDED ON THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES:

We are Revolutionary Matriarchy in practice through the highest standards of integrity, excellence, and music. We are majority oppressed nationality and identity. We focus on works with revolutionary and political significance by womyn, indigenous nations, and all oppressed peoples.
We are eco music: music for the sustainability of Mother Earth. We promote ecosocialism: the unity of humanity with the planet’s ecosystems. We respect our Mother Earth as provider of all life on this planet, and take concrete steps to lessen our ecological footprint for the health and well-being of all beings and future generations. We prefigure our space by minimizing waste, partnering with farms and local growers for our meals, and eliminating our consumption of plastics.

We are for the people. We understand that as revolutionary artists we are a weapon for the people. We are an ensemble of sound and color that utilizes our force against oppression, and provide a call to action for the masses. We honor the music of seven generations prior, while transcending for a new generation of revolutionary minds and souls. We bring arts and politics together through the fusion of genres, including hip hop, funk, latin, jazz, and the blues.
ABOUT MARIE INCONTRERA

Marie Incontrera is a composer, conductor, and band leader whose work spans queer opera, political big band, and music for the oppressed.

Marie has conducted as a bandleader as well as in classical and operatic settings at Brooklyn Academy of Music, WOW Cafe, Red Rooster Harlem, BarnArts Center for the Arts, and others. Marie conducted the Green Monster Big Band for Fred Ho’s final album, which has an international release date for later in 2014. Marie was Fred Ho’s last composition and conducting protege.

A fierce revolutionary warrior and Fred Ho’s last music student, Marie was tasked to take his music to the highest level of harmoniously merging music and ecology, or PONO — a Kanaka Maoli, indigenous Hawaiian concept, for elegant and exquisite equilibrium. Eco-Music strives for this equilibrium and beyond.
