October 9 – December 6, 2015
Opening Reception: Friday, October 9, 2015; 6:00 – 9:00 PM
Using site-specific installation and responding directly to Isaiah Zagar’s visionary environment, internationally acclaimed street artist Edgar “Saner” Flores will transform Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens’ galleries into his mythological playground. Colorful and paradoxical, Saner’s work will parallel Zagar’s mosaicked environment with murals, illustrations, video projections, and paintings created on salvaged material from Philadelphia. Fragments of the Soul explores what we have left behind in life and exposes the small, secret parts to our souls.
Raised in Mexico City and surrounded by rich color and tradition, Saner has been working in drawing, muralism, and street art since he was a young man. After earning a degree in graphic design from the Universidad Autónoma de Mexico, Saner rediscovered Mexican iconography and began mixing traditional folklore with his contemporary techniques. Working with media such as painting, illustration, muralism, and animation, Saner expresses a fresh Mexican vision that explores social chaos, revolution, love, passion, anger, fear, and sadness.
Saner’s work has been celebrated in many solo and group exhibitions, including his recent debut at Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York City, New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles, and his exhibition with Zagar at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Saner has also been featured in publications such as Hyperallergic and Juxtapoz Magazine. In partnership with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, Saner will also be creating a permanent public mural in South Philadelphia.
Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and Saner invite you to experience Fragments of the Soul during the pay-what-you-wish opening reception on Friday, October 9, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Come enjoy food by South Philly Barbacoa, music by Interminable, and a chance to chat with the artist himself!
