Stories of Jazz: the Beginning

Explore the evolution of jazz! Join us for the ragtime tunes of Scott Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton; the blues-based sounds of Joe “King” Oliver and the innovations of his protégé, Louis Armstrong; the vocal stylings of Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday; and music by jazz greats including Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, and Earl Hines. In the spirit of Apollo Theater–style entertainment, a tap-dancing performance inspired by the Nicholas Brothers will round out the evening.
