May 21, 2017 7:00-9:00PM Intercultural Journeys: Letters from Iraq
Don't miss an extraordinary evening of music with oud virtuoso, composer, and two-time Grammy nominee Rahim AlHaj. Letters from Iraq brings the untold stories of war and its consequences into vivid focus, as AlHaj and guest musicians weave together a stunning musical portrait of devastation, defiance, and redemption.
Rahim AlHaj was born in Baghdad, Iraq and began playing oud (short-necked Arabian lute) at age nine. He went on to study under Munir Bashir, considered by many to be the greatest oud player of the 20th century, and Salim Abdul Kareem, at the Institute of Music in Baghdad, Iraq. AlHaj received various awards at the Conservatory and graduated in 1990 with a diploma in composition. In 1991, after the first Gulf War, AlHaj was forced to leave Iraq due to his activism against the Baath regime, and arrived in the U.S. in 2000 as a political refugee. AlHaj was naturalized as a US citizen on August 15, 2008.
AlHaj has performed around the globe and is considered one of the world’s finest oud players. He has recorded and performed with many musicians of varied backgrounds and styles including guitarist Bill Frisell, accordionist Guy Klucevsek, sarod player Amjad Ali Khan, and indierockers REM. He has composed for solo oud, string quartet, string quintet, chamber ensembles, symphony, and more. Combining traditional Iraqi maqams with contemporary styling and influence, his pieces establish new concepts without altering the foundation of the traditional “Iraqi School of Oud.” AlHaj has released nine albums since 2002, two of which received GRAMMY® nominations. His latest, Infinite Hope (2015), was recorded in collaboration with Amjad Ali Khan, a follow up to their 2008 GRAMMY-nominated Ancient Sounds. In 2009 AlHaj was honored with a United States Artists Ford Fellowship Award and in 2015 the National Endowment for The Arts National Heritage Fellowship.

May 20, 2017 10:00AM-5:00PM Philly Drum Project Member Retreat
Anyone who sees the value of a Percussive Collective in Philadelphia - and sees themselves playing a role in that collective - is welcome and encouraged to join us on Saturday, May 20th, from 10am-5pm. (Location TBD)
This Saturday, Philly Drum Project members (and future members) will gather to reimagine what a community-focused Percussive Collective will look like here in Philadelphia. This is not just your average PDP drum event; we need you to join us on May 20th to set a new direction for the organization, vote on our democratically-elected leadership, and learn from some presenters on drums and community. We've already secured some great presenters for this event, including Philly jazz favorite and Temple University faculty member Byron Landham, Modern Drummer Editor Mike Dawson, Drum Like A Lady founder LaTreice Branson, members of Prometheus Chamber Orchestra, and Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance director, Peter Frank. Lunch will be included as well as coffee and snacks.
Philly Drum Project presents:
PDP Member Retreat: Building Community Through Drums
Saturday, May 20th, 10AM-5PM
Location: Philly Drum Project Member Retreat: Building Community Through Drumming
Saturday, May 20th, 9:30AM Registration, 10AM-5PM
West Catholic Preparatory High School, in the Music House
To get to West Catholic Music House: Enter via the parking lot on 46th St., just north of Chestnut. Look for the courtyard on the parking lot side and look for signs for the Music House.
RSVP Here to let us know you're coming.
Will you run for Leadership? Will you vote on Leadership?
One of the goals of this Saturday's Member Retreat is to elect a Steering Committee for the organization. This committee will serve as the elected leaders, to manage funds, ratify bylaws, make decisions on initiatives, manage committees, etc. The Steering Committee will meet roughly once every two months in person, and have contact via email in between meetings. To serve on the Steering Committee, you need to be a dues-paying member, agree to the values of the organization, and have a desire to help build the collective. Is that you? On Saturday, all members will have an opportunity to run for a seat on the Steering Committee. All members will also have the opportunity to vote on members of the committee. Don't miss this great opportunity! Come join us on Saturday.
Over the past 5 years, Philly Drum Project has helped bring people together around drums in Philly, amassed a member base of around 1,000 individuals including 100 dues-paying members, offered free, high-quality drum programming to over 50 students in the city, brought a high-caliber drum festival to Philadelphia, and much more. As Philly Drum Project enters its 6th year of helping drummers in Philadelphia share resources, we will gather our most active members of the past, present, and future, to lay out a plan for the next 5 years of Philly Drum Project. It's time to harness the talents, energies, and passions of our most active members to come together over a full day of guest speakers, workshops, and planning sessions, to kick-start a new, member-run era of Philly Drum Project.

May 20, 2017 5:00-10:00PM Rhythm and Blues and Shoes at Rittenhouse Soundworks
that bebop jazz drummers like Kenny Clarke, Max Roach and Art Blakey took inspiration for many of their complex licks and riffs from tap dancers. As the jazz music evolved and got more complicated, (and fast), the tap dancers of the era found ways to evolve the art form to a place where the shoes fit into the hard-swinging compositions. Even in this post-post bebop-era of dance and music, the idea is still compelling us to return to this music and find new ways to layer the tap instrument into the groove. This concert features the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Bobby Timmons, Art Blakey, Wayne Shorter and original compositions by Pamela Hetherington.
