June 15, 2017 7:00-8:30PM Summer Jazz Series @Hawthorne Park with Ensemble Novo

Jazz Bridge is delighted to host Ensemble Novo at their Summer Concert Series, “Jazz in Hawthorne Park” located in the park at 12th & Catherine Streets, Phila., PA on Thursday, June 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. These concerts are FREE and lawn chairs, beach chairs, picnic baskets and some friends are welcome to have a great time. Rain date is June 22.

In the years since the release of its debut Blue Night in 2013, Philadelphia-based Ensemble Novo has refined a sound that’s perfectly suited to its primary inspiration – music made in Brazil during the 1960s and early 70s. As is true of so much from Brazil, this is music that encourages (and sometimes demands) dancing, but is equally suited to contemplative listening.

Ensemble Novo, a six-piece Brazilian Jazz group of Philadelphia is comprised of Behn Gillece (vibraphone), Ryan McNeely (electric and nylon string guitars), Mark Przybylowski (bass guitar), Eli Sklarsky (drums), Jim Hamilton (percussion) and Tom Moon (saxophone).

Ensemble Novo is the brainchild of Tom Moon, the best-selling author and former Philadelphia Inquirer music critic who currently contributes to NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Moon studied music at the University of Miami, and while living in South Florida amassed an enviable resume – performing in pit orchestras behind Tony Bennett, Eddie Fisher and others, working in salsa bands, entertaining on cruise ships, and touring for a year with the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra. Moon returned to active music-making in 2010, after the publication of 1000 Recordings.

The Jazz Bridge Project is an award winning non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to assisting jazz and blues musicians in the Philadelphia area in their time of crisis. The summer concert series in Hawthorne Park is being presented with funding from the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Alterra Property Group.
